There’s always be the first time

Today, for the very first time in my life, I drove a car.

I actually went out of a multi-storey car park, onto the road, and finally back in another multi- storey car park near my house. All safe and sound. It felt unbelievably good yet terrifying at the same time because this time there was no instructor to tell me which way to go (Panda was as clueless as me) and no extra brake pedal to save me from doing fatal mistakes.

It all started with us picking up a rented car at the nearest station from our home. My plan was actually to drive straight into our block’s car park just to make sure I would not overdo it on my first driving experience. But Panda talked me into going round the ‘hood and maybe visit our friends who live in the north area. The thing is, it was Friday night and there were a lot of cars on the street. I didn’t dare to lane change to the left (bad practice, I know) so all the way I just drove on the 1st lane until we realized that we had to turn left at the next junction but it’s impossible (by my standard) to lane change. And that started a one-hour journey where neither the driver nor the passenger-cum-navigator knew how to go back home. We just drove and drove, and once even mistakenly went into an expressway, until we were finally back on the main road leading back home.

Car park is another monster to tackle. I just realized that the schools only teach us to park to the left side for both vertical and parallel parking. But the left bays of my car park are for season parking pass holder only so no choice I had to park to the right. Let’s just say I was lucky to find 2 empty adjacent bays. Otherwise I’d be talking to the insurance company instead of blogging now.

How do I go from New York to London?

Ask Google for directions, of course

Sink or swim?

Definitely swim! After a long and treacherous journey (not to mention an expensive one), I finally passed my driving test today. This is despite forgetting to put on my seat belt and messing up really badly at parallel parking at the beginning of the test. Out of 7 candidates, only 3 passed the test so that’s quite an achievement for me especially since this is my first attempt.

Driving school registration fee: $84
PDL renewal: $25
35 driving lessons: $2625
The feeling when the traffic police checked the ‘passed’ box: priceless
