Darn you, thyroid!

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been going through my daily life like an old woman. I mean reeeeal old with wobbly legs and trembling hands. Yep, my thyroid attacks came back for the 3rd time. This morning I couldn’t even stand more than 10 mins while waiting for the taxi. Darn! I thought I could get rid of this forever after swallowing pills for 1.5 years but noooo, it has to keep coming back after every 3 years or so. Why oh why???

The first time it happened, I lost weight rapidly even though I snacked on Nutella and peanut butter (meaning eating both of them, with spoon, directly from the jars). I actually weighed less than 50kg, can you believe that? My hands trembled, most visibly during meals, and Panda thought that’s because I was hungry. Well, I WAS hungry all the time then. My heartbeat also increased as if I had been doing workouts, and again Panda innocently thought I got ‘butterfly in my stomach’ being close to him. Bah! After all the excitements of being able to slip into size XS, it turned out that I had hyperthyroid and not supermodel genes. Talk about huge disappointment.

It was also then that I knew my mom had the same thing before. And that worries me. I read somewhere that thyroid problem is sort of genetic, which means my future kids may have it as well. It didn’t pass to my sister so there’s still hope, but I still hate to think that it’s high chance for me to deliberately and knowingly pass the illness to my future kids. Darn you, thyroid!

HI, I know the feeling as I have the same thing. It’s called Graves Disease. It will never go away but can be controlled by medication and regular blood tests. If you’re lucky enough, like me, you can slowly reduce the dosage gradually. Grin and bear….just keep swallowing.
